A few years ago my mate put down his pint, looked into my soul and declared "never miss a football match in jan or feb" I of course asked him why he made such a bold statement, and he proclaimed with much enthusiasm "that's when players are at their perfect match fitness for the entire season. " I wonder- despite the horror show this World Cup will bring- are we in for a cracking tournament where players are at their best chasing the ultimate goal? I hope and also hope not.

Well yeah I get that?, my point was the football might be better than after a long season when players have been running hard for months. I’m looking for anything positive to think about with this farce of a tournament. It’s called desperation.

Don’t players miss the world cups from injuries regardless of time of year. Oh to think how far Ireland would have gone in 94 were we able to have big niall Quinn up front for us.
