Hi Eds ns reds, I wanted to double check the protocol if teams finish on the same points.

Reading on the Premier League website, its states the following.

"If any clubs finish with the same number of points, their position in the Premier League table is determined by goal difference, then the number of goals scored. If the teams still cannot be separated, they will be awarded the same position in the table. "

If we look at the next couple of games, it could be feasible (albeit unlikely) that we win our remaining 2 games and still not get into the top 4:

Chelsea beat Leicester by one goal, we beat Burnley by one goal, table looks like this:

Chelsea - pts 67 GD 23
Liverpool - pts 66 GD 22
Leicester - pts 66 GD 20

Chelsea beat Villa (by any number of goals, but let's say 1 goal), we beat Palace by one goal, Leicester beat Spurs by 4 goals, table looks like this:

Chelsea - pts 70 GD 24
Leicester - pts 69 GD 24
Liverpool - pts 69 GD 23

That being the case, maybe the best result for us on Tuesday is a Leicester win or a draw. That does mean we will be less likely to get 3rd, but at least a loss or a draw for Chelsea will mean that the maximum points they can get will be 67 or 68, whereas we can reach 69.

On a separate point, Eds, looking at the Premier League statement, let's say us and Leicester finished on the same points with the same GD and same goals scored (very unlikely but not impossible as Leicester have scored 65 and we have scored 63), then we could BOTH finish 4th.

Would that mean that we get 5 teams in the CL next season, or would there be a playoff or equivalent?

The potential 5th English place will not be taken by the EL or CL winners as the English teams involved are all already in the top 4.

Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - The clubs would share the position. There is no extra place available for the Champions League so there would need to be a play off.}

I hope we get in there along with Leicester. So I'll be gunning for a Leicester victory or a draw will do!

OK, thanks Ed002. As if by magic, after I'd sent this post in, I spotted that the Echo had a similar article. They suggest that before the playoff, the Premier League would look at the head to head record, which is marginally in our favour given the goal we scored in the King Power. Finger crossed!

{Ed002's Note - Ok, thanks.}

Good post Zed.
The good thing about the remaining games is they all have plenty to play for, Spurs going for Europa and possibly Villa for the Conference.
Agree that a Leicester win would be better for us though.
Let’s get the 2 wins and see where it takes us.

I will be on team Leicester as well.

Leicester won't beat Spurs.

As far as I understand, if us and Leicester are on the same points and GD, it’ll be based on head to head, and because we beat them 3-0 and they beat us 3-1, we would get the nod based on that one away goal.

That’s what reports are saying anyway. I’m hoping for a Leicester win tomorrow also, but then I would prefer chelsea beating city to the CL so Chelsea would get top 4 anyway.

Hey Kman, yep, that's what the Echo said and I added in my second post above.

However, its if we are on the same points, same GD and same goals scored that it goes to head to head (according to the Echo) .

So we will not get a play off this season as even if everything else aligned, we are 1 goal better off in the head to head.

There's a lot to play for and I didn't think I'd be saying that a few weeks ago.
Also, watch out for a late charge from Allison for the Golden Boot.

I had no idea it went to amount of goals scored, that’s pretty stupid if that’s the case. GD should end that area of debate, as goals conceded should also be taken into account if we are considering goals scored. It should just be GD, then head to head and if it’s still even then a play off match. Those are the only logical solutions.

Kman92, it has always gone to amount of goals scored as the second tie breaker if the GD for both teams are the same.
