Let’s see if he is willing to take a pay cut first before we praise him. Football is in a mess mainly due to clubs over paying on wages. Cut the wages then you can cut the number of games.

None of them have a point until they come out and say let’s cut players wages. They can’t have everything. Football is in massive debt, bled dry by players and agents. It’s easy for him to run his mouth off on £300k a week. If he cared so much he should be the first to say I think top players should be paid less.

It’s all about making money isn’t it? The players are paid the market rate and I agree with Courtiois up to a point.

More matches = more media = more revenue = more money for players’ contracts : might be simplistic but is a reasonable working model.

What would happen if, say, we could go back to the 1960’s and not have live matches shown via the media? Of course we can’t because the genie is out of the bottle. So seemingly, the only semi-viable viable option is to reduce the number of matches and protect player welfare.

With a World Cup every two years and the Nations Cup every other two years and UEFA now having 3 competitions and Owners / Sponsors now wanting the extra pond of flesh a. k. a. the pre-season tour (USA, Asia and local 4 team invitational tournaments) the well is getting pretty dry in terms of elite player downtime.

One of the things mentioned frequently last season when our form dipped dramatically was that the players had basically completed the 2019/ 20 season about half an hour before the 2020/ 21 season started, which worth bearing in mind - not least with the ridiculous cashfest that is Qatar on the horizon. Erosion of health will diminish the quality of football, at least at the elite level. There are instances in which clubs are stepping up to protect the welfare of players but it isn’t systematic as yet ….

Anyway, enough - I’m just an average footy fan and my thinking gets me as far as the Watford match on Saturday. Come on you Redmen.

Mark, why would Courtois take a pay cut exactly? If that is your logic then, Klopp should do the same cos he has being all over this topic since he arrived in 2015. Your logic makes no sense.
