If Liverpool are skint at the moment (god help where we would be without all the trophy revenue and premier league winners money plus our commercial success and fan base would have grown significantly) when a team is at the top you should only add players who are good enough to challenge for a first team place if not you are just padding the squad out. So if you aren't improving the first 11 it seems like a waste of money? Am I wrong?

its all about the squad now, with having five subs, and there may not be time for a winter break, so even more games to play, so having cover for injuries, loss if form, red cards, and rotation means more pressure on the first team, we do need proper cover, hence this Jamel Lewis signing, I hope .

Yes and no. We need a back up left back, you could spend a hell of a lot of money and not get a better fullback than Andy Robbo. You are right though, if we’re skint now whilst sitting on top of the Footballing world, then something isn’t right.

What do you mean having five subs?

New main stand, new state of the art training set up, worlds most expensive goalkeeper, world's most expensive defender.

CV.

What's hard to understand here .

{Ed002's Note - So Kepa Arrizabalaga and Harry Maguire have been signed by Liverpool?}

I disagree. I think it's a game of a 25 man squad over a 38 game season and it's a mistake to focus entirely on the starting XI. Make the improvements where possible, within the means possible. You're bound to need players beyond the first 11 due to various reasons, over the season, and you can't aspire to titles if there's a big drop off in quality. In good years go out and make the larger bets (VVD, Allison, Keita) and in weaker years, buy what you can; question of prudent budgeting and all managers know how to do it.

Clyne, Lovren and Lallana have moved on. Their replacements in Lewis, Jones and a player to be named later, all constitute big savings in both wages (at least at present) and transfer fees. But we're in an environment of significant revenue fall, so who knows what the club's objectives will be? Minimize the damage and spend almost nothing or do the necessary and go for the title again and improve where possible? And then hope for profits the years after. Nobody can argue against a backup for Robertson. Milner has stamina and still plays like a kamikaze, but he's getting injured more and more often. Shouldn't depend on him entirely.

Hindsight is always 20/ 20. So you have to guard against things being seen, said or will be said such as " ManC lost the title because they didn't bother replacing Kompany", "LFC should have seen the trend in Firmino's production and found a better backup than Origi/ Minamino earlier" or "LFC should have known that the ageing Milner was not going to be good enough to back up Robertson's injury". This is what management is all about.

At least we’re not in the awful position that Arsenal have found / put themselves in, making staff redundant whilst ludicrously large transfer fees and players’ wages are being paid and considered.
I really don’t get that at all.
Say what you like about fan groups like SoS at Liverpool but, I feel, they represent the supporters’ voice very well and very forcefully when required.

OP, It is a squad game now due to the amount of games we play in a season so not sure what your post is about.

I think a 22 Yr old full international has every chance to push for a first team place. I know Robbo is unbelievable but none of us thought so while he was at Hull, although I thought he was decent.

Come on Ed 002 at the time record prices, in ten years time going rate for talented 18yr olds .

Who knows?

{Ed002's Note - For three weeks in the case of Alisson.}

Thank god not ed2, imagine signing that dross. Biggest waste of money on a keeper ever, be lucky to get 20 million for him these days.

I don't get this sudden doubt about Firmino? Like he's on a downward trend? The guy doesn't rely on pace at all. He will be effective for many years to come, despite getting on a wee bit. That crystal Palace game where we ultimately tied up the title he was glorious. I absolutely love him, still a world class player. Ask van djike who is the best player he has come up against and he'll tell you it's Roberto Firmino. Nuff said.
