one of my not so guilty pleasures in life is watching old videos of Zidane in full flight with French commentators. When Im not marvelling at the skill, Im in hysterics at the "ooh la la" and "bop bop bop" in the background. The french are way better at commenting than the average british pundit.

Zidane is hands down my favourite player ever. Just loved his skill. I hold him up there with the best of the best.

Unfortunately he may get remembered more for the headbutt than his actual ability even though he was a fantastic player.

That headbutt was beautiful also Piffmunda.

I always really enjoyed watching Ronaldinho, Totti and Del Piero on the old school ITV European nights growing up. Something magical about old school football. I do genuinely think the modern teams would tactically and athletically roll them over with ease, but the beautiful side of the game peaked in 1990-2010 I reckon.

Zidane was a beautiful player to watch but I always thought he didn’t play his best nor was most effective at Real. A bit of a, with that much ability, surely he could have been more effectual overall? (Not withstanding he had outstanding moments like his volley to win the CL against BL, but wasn’t quite consistent in the big games I felt)

There was also the issue with his boots having Velcro like material that was later banned? Not sure if he could control just as well if he didn’t had those. I’m sure he was already excellent but having those probably helped that little bit more?

Zidane was a truly great player indeed BUT I totally watched the great Portuguese playmaker Rui Cossta play. El Maetro was classical music in motion. A true legend of the beautiful game.

Ronaldinho and then Jay-Jay Okocha for me. Both played with a smile on their face and represented proper entertainment. Something worth spending your money to watch rather than the more robotic players we tend to produce nowadays.

@sgynwa, Zidane was a vile thug on the pitch as well and that plagued him through out his career. Headbutts was his preferred vile act/ mode of operation. Had been doing that since his Bordeux days where in one game I watched in the 93/ 94 season, he blatantly head-butted a young Marcel Desailly of Marseille and was sent off on the spot.

Stumped on Saudi Arabia's Fuad Amin's back in the '98 WC and got a 2 game ban. Headbutted a Hamburg player in the CL in 00/ 01 season which eventually cost him the Balon D'Or to Luis Figo.

Ironic that his final game ended with a red card off you guessed it, a brutal headbutt on Materazzi in the WC final in '06. Great player BUT an absolute thug, as well.
