{Ed002's Note - I am serious - he was look at by Roy Hodgson.}

The latest cab off the rank is a Nuri Sahin return to Liverpool. Any legs on this or is it more mindless journos with nothing else to do?

Believable3 Unbelievable13

06 Jun 2016 23:00:46
Why does every uday rumour need legs nowadays? Not like the old days when all a rumour needed was a mates David villas dog walkers hairdresser and they said he was on his way to anfield on the back of ian rates harley.

06 Jun 2016 23:32:27
Ha ha fencey about right mate.

06 Jun 2016 19:22:48
Vardy going to Arsenal, will Ranieri go for Benteke as replacement, also what do people think if Koeman gets Everton job will SAMMY LEE cross the park and work for the enemy i am watching this like a hawk, over to you SAMMY?

Believable0 Unbelievable6

{Ed002's Note - Leicester have two players in mind and neither is Benteke.}

06 Jun 2016 19:40:22
Sammy Lee failed his FA coaching badges more times than anyone eve!

06 Jun 2016 20:05:52
Think deeney and musa are the two strikers they want to sign.

07 Jun 2016 07:33:31
Sell a Ferrari, replace with a JCB?!

06 Jun 2016 17:51:17
Eds reds with koln allegedly saying hector would cost £ 23 million presumably this rules out any deal so who do we go for at left back? My own opinion is bertrand and yes I know another saints player! But I wanted him with us when he left chelski! ! Ed02 said we should go for him at the time.

Believable1 Unbelievable7

{Ed002's Note - I was told be everyone here that Hector was confirmed on Saturady and signed his contract during the half time break in the Germany game? Were you all teasing me?}

06 Jun 2016 18:50:23
Textbook ed002.

06 Jun 2016 19:31:47
Yes ed002 I can confirm he was one of the left backs we signed on Saturday, but we've loaned him out along with the other 4 from Saturday.

06 Jun 2016 22:07:09
Indeed ed, it was all a smokescreen for Suarez and his teeth transfering back to Pool during the half-time of the friendly match with Barcelona.

06 Jun 2016 17:21:30
Great post earlier from square tomato re JG. I'd be more than happy with those four CBs for the season, three comps and Lucas as cover.

Would have liked to see Toure stay, but if he's only seen as a possible if player then his wages are better off the books.

Great- can ignore any press talk on CB signings.

Hey Es and Reds,

With leftback a priority position this summer, who do you think was the best LB that we've ever had? Imo, it's Alan Kennedy, the man for the big occasion. What do y'all think?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - on those rare occasions he was fit and firing, Aurelio was pure class. I think it only happened twice though....}

06 Jun 2016 17:09:22
Bang on Ed01. He was pure quality and such a humble lad. He was so effortless that he didn't need to run up down every time. Positioqllu sound and brilliant left foot.

06 Jun 2016 17:25:03
In my all time Liverpool 11 I would play Emlyn Hughes there. He started his career at Liverpool in that position and he played many games for England at left back. Honestly though Hughes could play anywhere and never let the club down.

06 Jun 2016 17:46:07
Was Steve Nicol considered a left back? He was brilliant in what ever position he played.

06 Jun 2016 17:46:07
Was Steve Nicol considered a left back? He was brilliant in what ever position he played.

06 Jun 2016 17:52:54
Alan Kennedy swiftly followed by Aurelio.

06 Jun 2016 18:18:16
Stig. na. Kennedy defo. don't forget beglin.

06 Jun 2016 18:24:06
A enjoyed watching riise. But it's been a problem position for a while.

06 Jun 2016 19:25:25
Alec Lindsey. One tough player with an attitude. Going back a bit now.

06 Jun 2016 20:37:20
Only seen video footage but I like the look of Phil Neal.

06 Jun 2016 20:55:50
John Arne riise was the ultimate 'fantasy league' left back!

06 Jun 2016 21:20:36
Neal played on the right, if I remember correctly.

Aurelio was class for a couple of games, but using that criteria Joe Gomez would be up there.

Alan Kennedy would run through a brick wall, he scored the winner against Real Madrid in a Champions Cup final in 1981 and then scored the decisive penalty in the the 1984 final against Roma, in Rome.

This is not the odd domestic screamer territory, this is a slam dunk.

06 Jun 2016 22:30:00
Ziege anyone?

06 Jun 2016 22:58:15
Djimi Traore was class, he won a champions league trophy too.

06 Jun 2016 23:29:20
I could tell you who I think is the worst, and it isn't Enrique.

06 Jun 2016 23:30:12
Alec Lindsay no question pure class a great footballer.

07 Jun 2016 00:02:37
No love for Steve Staunton! :-/.

07 Jun 2016 00:20:05
Lerchy - I would say Julian Dicks was the worst.

06 Jun 2016 16:53:07
Drinkwater is a good player but he always looks dehydrated to me.

Believable16 Unbelievable2

06 Jun 2016 17:07:53
His cousin Eatfood looks hungrier player though.

06 Jun 2016 17:09:48
Hence you need to drink water lol.

06 Jun 2016 20:17:38
Parma interested in signing Drinkwater.
Gonna play him behind the number 10- Luca Zade.

06 Jun 2016 16:47:03
This pre season could make or break Jon Flanagan's career, if he can respond to the work and gain fitness then he will be like a new signing next season but if his body is not up to it then I fear for the lad but let's hope he gains full fitness to get back to the top.

Believable6 Unbelievable2

07 Jun 2016 08:16:04
Why? He could conceivably break into the first team sometime midway through the season, and cement his place. Why put that kind of pressure on him in preseason?

07 Jun 2016 09:00:59
He's got a great future with us I reckon, just got to give him some time, he's young.

06 Jun 2016 16:33:33
The term Kopflose hunh has been used by, I think ed 002, to describe our style of play under Klopp.
Kopflose hunh = headless chicken.
Great sense of humour Ed. TBF, describes the 2nd half of the europa final.

Believable8 Unbelievable3

06 Jun 2016 16:48:26
Haha can't believe it's only just been noticed.

06 Jun 2016 17:24:37
It's taken long enough to cry fowl play.
Kopflose huhn is in contrast with the "não me importo" style of Mourinho's last days at CFC ;-)

06 Jun 2016 15:00:27
I like klopp, one of the best coaches in the world. But, even though he has made some good young signings in the past he really needs to sign a big player. Higuain, Reus, Griezmann, Lacazette or even Mkhitaryan would just add an element of worry into a team full of OK player (except Coutinho)

Believable4 Unbelievable12

06 Jun 2016 15:18:50
Why does he need to sign a "Big Player"? How well have Balotelli and Benteke worked out?
We're OK for centre forwards and attacking midfielders, all the names you suggest are forward looking.
Don't mean to sound snippy, but we need some pragmatism, not to pander to fans' egos. Our problem has been holding onto leads.

06 Jun 2016 15:31:04
AndyM, I wouldn't class balotelli or benteke in that category if I'm honest. Benteke was a good striker at Aston villa but showed patches of inconsistencies, was never classed as world class like those players and couldn't even get in the Belgium first team. Balo was literally just a marquee name, more for the negative stuff he does rather than the positives. We have never bought a star marquee name that we all know would improve us, and when we have looked like doing that we miss out and act as if we where showing intent and on the verge of a massive transfer but never really put the effort in. There are countless examples of that during the years. Suarez was probably the last relatively big name that was considered top class, and look how that turned out.

But in reply to the original post, I think we would all like a player in that mould but it's not how klopp works. And I have no problem with that just as long as we target the right players with obvious quality. Players that will improve our first team, trust me they do not have to be world class to do that, judging by how average our squad is. But we aren't even really targeting top quality more established players. It's still early days so we should really wait and see, but the early signs indicate that it's quantity rather than quality in my opinion. This has failed for the past few seasons and I don't see much of a difference upcoming.

06 Jun 2016 15:34:44
For Liverpool right now a big player is a player who fills a position we desperately need filing and is a marked improvement on what we already have.

06 Jun 2016 15:55:40
To be fair Andy. They aren't really big signings. In the same breathe that summer we signed ballo and lallana, griezmann was going for about 30 mil, we should of just slapped down 35/ 40 million. and been done with it. Your perception of big player signings would of changes if that of had happened.

Last summer benteke and firmino. Both could of been a 60/ 70 million pound bid for aubameyang. Yes we most probably would of fallen after maybe having a bid accepted due to him wanting Madrid etc

We sign players for big money rather than big players for big money, we have always done and it and will continue to do so.

We wouldn't worry about spending 35 mil on Carroll but when there's top quality available, costa, mkihi, Sanchez, Willian, Tex, we worry about the money.

Not a chance of money worry if its lallana, Marko, ballo, benteke, lovren, firmino.

To be fair I'm not necessarily having a go at the contribution of some of the above nor there worth but watch this summer.

1st choice will go elsewhere due to haggling and we will probably spend more on our 2nd choice.

06 Jun 2016 15:56:27
Andy
The majority of fans knew that ballotelli and benteke were awful signings. There are and were never "big " signings
We need a few top players in this summeR Or another year of struggling and mid table.

06 Jun 2016 16:25:34
I worry when I see us going after the likes of Gibbs, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Drinkwater, Nolito and Yarmelenko. All of them being bang average players and not good enough to get us competing at the top. It's bad enough that we've failed so badly in the transfer market for so many years and don't appear to be learning any lessons.

06 Jun 2016 17:26:55
Please don't put Benteke and Ballotelli in the same category, their Liverpool careers are completely different.

06 Jun 2016 17:58:11
Agree muscatred, Balotelli is a waster and a bad decision, Benteke is just the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

06 Jun 2016 17:41:21
Balotelli never wanted to play anywhere let alone Liverpool while Benteke was a wrong gamble which backfired. Both were poor signing from the financial point of view and you could thank Brendan and TC for it.

06 Jun 2016 20:17:55
Adebayo Akinfenwa is a big player he's huge would he do for the big player signing.

06 Jun 2016 10:34:48
A lot on here would like the youth to be given a chance. But in their next post, they want players that will only improve the starting 11 to be bought. So I ask you, what if we didn't own players like Ojo, Ibe, Stewart, etc.
And rumours started that we were interested in signing them from another team? Say Ibe for 7mil, Ojo for 9mil, Stewart for 6 mil. Would you be happy?
As much as its good to be loyal to our players, we also have to think about what would a winning starting 11 be, and aim for that 1st.
Would a fairly good bench of potential young players push a decent starting 11 to higher heights?
Would a bench of already proven players do this better?
I think its time we look at "winning" rather than building. We have been building for way too long now.
And that for me, means a good mix of :
1. A strong staring 11
2. A strong bench of potential and experience (players you would be moderatelt happy with being part of the starting 11
3. Players in the squad that show exception potential. (Players like Gomez, Ojo)

06 Jun 2016 11:05:30
Any sustainable success, in any co-operative venture in any sphere of life, business or sport, requires both diversity and team spirit. Diversity because different talents are needed to overcome different challenges and team spirit, because it doesn't matter how talented your 'players' are, if they are not pulling in the same direction. We could get a bench of proven players, but if there was major discontent about them not starting all the time, would that foster the team spirit and ethic we need? Whilst I agree with you about 'Winning now' we also need to think about the future. Although FSG have made good strides on the commercial front, and have backed our managers, we still aren't in the same economic league as some of our rivals. We will have to grow some our own to succeed longer term. The Eds have consistently suggested that our youth policy has been a shambles, would be interested to hear from them if lessons are being learned?

06 Jun 2016 12:03:22
First, to AndyF and AndyM, two excellent thought-provoking posts in my opinion. Our youth policy has been an absolute shambles with dozens of gifted young players brought in (many from abroad), ruined, then discarded.

Take Tiago Ilori for example. He is 23 years of age. He has had three full seasons as a registerd LFC player. He has made a total of zero Premiership starts. I have no idea whether he will ever make it as a top-flight player, but what a way to treat a young talent.

What is clear is that Klopp is not a fan of of our loan policy. This season we have had 22 players at other clubs, don't be surprised to see that reduced to four or six next season. Also, we will be running much smaller squads at all age levels next season.

The current crop of U21 players may well have an increased role to play, I really like the look of Brannagan and Ojo. But unless we bring in three or four top players, like all of the teams around us will do, we will have to settle for finishing in mid table again for the next few seasons and I am not sure how many of us would be happy with that.

06 Jun 2016 11:52:37
I think what we want is a very strong first team and youth to cover them.

Ward for migs last season instead of signing bodgan.

Ojo to cover the wings

Sinclair to cover origi

Gomez to cover lovren

Smith to cover moreno

I know sinclair has wlft but that's th3 sort of sitution you wsnt

Instead of signing not very good players to cover are first team players on big and ling contracts.

Karius and migs

This summer our cbs should be lovren, sakho, matip and gomez

Full backs clyne and flanno. Hector and smith

Henderson, can, dahoud and brannagan

Lallana, coutinho, firmino, ojo, milner

Origi, sturridge and ings.

06 Jun 2016 12:51:04
I still am not at all convinced that Dahoud is what we need in centre midfield, as he is too lightweight and if last season proved anything, it was the need for a physically imposing centre midfielder who was strong in the tackle and could provide the defence with some reasonable cover.

I would also say that the squad that you have put there lacks any serious pace and only one proper winger in Ojo.

That squad wouldn't finish higher than 6th. And that is being generous.

06 Jun 2016 14:21:02
We don't know where such a squad would finish, no-one gave Leicester an earthly chance. Several posters have pointed out we dropped so many points from winning positions; and whilst this won't drop to zero, we will hopefully improve with a better defence. Paulo has missed Grujic out of the equation, and he has been bought to start imo. Also Ibe. Can't see Dahoud -. L'pool happening this summer. A fit Ings will be like another signing (I hope! ) .

06 Jun 2016 14:39:17
Thing about Leicester is that they had a great defensive central midfielder in Kante who was able to give their centrebacks a lot of cover, we don't have anyone of that quality.

They also had pace and skill in abundance through Vardy and Mahrez and we don't have that either.

Essentially that is the same squad that struggled this year with a few minor tweeks. I don't see that anything would significantly change as the major problems would still be there and that being a soft centre and a lack of penetration.

06 Jun 2016 14:54:25
Andy F - I wouldn't be happy seeing these guys (except maybe Stuart) being bought for anything other than negligible costs, but that's somewhat the point - what we'd like to avoid is players who play consistently and have finished 'developing' but are not notably more able than our most talented very young players having money spent on them and be given squad places over those who, with a bit of work and patience, will soon be far better. Nor would I want other teams youth players, unless they were demonstrating themselves to be considerably better than ours, to be bought in to the detriment of ours consistently. It's a question of conservation of resources - if you have a realistically potential workable solution to a problem, you shouldn't expend resources until that problem has been road tested (except in situations where any risk cannot be tolerated) . It's a principal us, and all other clubs, need to start applying.

06 Jun 2016 15:23:00
I'm not sure our main problem has been a lack of penetration, they've been keeping hold of a lead and having fit strikers. The defensive deficiencies appear to be being addressed (Matip, Karius, a new LB), I'd hope we couldn't be as unlucky with Ings and Origi for 2 years in a row.

06 Jun 2016 15:57:51
To be fair dahiud is exactly what we need. He's a big strong lad, you definstly haven't watched him. He is silky smooth which may make you think he csnt do the gritty work.

Secindly were looking for a partner for can (who himself is big a strong) wr need that passing a creativitiy next to him. Xhaka and dahoud where fabulous last term, xhaxa was steel and dahiud was silk. Silk and steel sounds like a b rate cop show haha.

06 Jun 2016 16:10:33
Kante's not really a defensive mid MR Dennis. He's more a box to box midfielder that covers a lot of ground, making it look like he's a bit more defensive than he actually is. Not sure why you want a "physically imposing centre midfielder" either. The physicality isn't what's important in a defensive mid, it's his positioning and reading of the game that's the most important. If you just go for physicality you'll get someone like Wanyama who is very physical yet exceedingly average.

06 Jun 2016 16:30:42
Dahoud isn't a big strong lad by any stretch of the imagination, he's 5'9" and looks like he could eat a few steaks. As for Kante his job last year was to effectively do the legwork for Drinkwater (hence the quote about Kabte playing both sides of Drinkwater) and Kante is a physically tough player, which Dahoud isn't. Fact of the matter is that another lightweight in midfield isn't going to help us we have to get a tough spine to the team or we're just preparing for another year of failure.

06 Jun 2016 16:32:42
As for the point about physicality in centre midfield, it's exactly what you need in an enforcer, give me Graeme Souness over Pirlo any day of the week.

06 Jun 2016 17:11:13
Souness was still a very good footballer though, something you don't get with most "enforcers" these days. Also, I never said anything about Dahoud so I don't know why you're doing a comparison between him and Kante.
Henderson and Can have a good understanding, aren't going to get bullied, and are have good technique. If we need a more defensive option to join them then we have Lucas and Stewart who can come in. Signing a physical enforcer with no regards to how the team wants to play is just ridiculous.

06 Jun 2016 17:12:02
You all forgetting where looking for a partner for can?

Is he not big and strong enough for use.

He's was great most games last year apart from when he was stool next to Milner or Allen in the middle.

Plonk modric next to him and we have one of the best mids in the league. You don't need two big lads.

Yes you will all say modric would transform any midfield. We need someone of that ilk a smooth operator and let can bash people up. You have also all forgot we have matip and grujic who are both tall btards. How fooking tall do you want this team, are we playing in the epl or nba. ?

06 Jun 2016 18:04:24
Paulo, again you're forgetting that huge hole in our midfield that Seville, Southampton, Newcastle etc were able to run through at will. Can is a box to box midfielder, we don't need another, we need a disciplined, strong and dominant centre midfielder who can defend. Can played defensive midfield against Seville and wasn't able to stem the flow, because he's not really that type of midfielder. We should go for one of the Bender brothers.

06 Jun 2016 17:47:48
Paulo is pretty much bang on. We needed a player which Allen couldn't be to us. Dahoud fits that bill perfectly. Real play Modric and Kroos together hardly any imposing monster.
People keeps forgetting Henderson was injured for a large portion of last season and there is every chance he might reeat coming season. Our second choice players aren't up to the required quality. Dahoud would give us a different dimension and a good competition in the middle.

If Can is the steel then Dahoud could be the silk.

06 Jun 2016 10:03:30
Hi Eds not sure if this has been asked recently or not, but any confirmation on what's happening with Sakho regarding his doping claims? Is it confirmed that no further punishment will be given?

I know RoW tired yesterday but.

considering lots of posters reckon we need a winger, Jack Whitehall worth a shout?

quite impressed with him, didn't think he would be able to play as his head is too big for his body, but fair play to the lad, hasn't held him back.

06 Jun 2016 10:09:18
I was surprised Kieron Dyer played so long! maybe he is over his injuries. worth a punt?

06 Jun 2016 11:50:06
i'd take Ronaldinho and Berbatov, the little passes between them were great :P, Must admit though Jack whitehall was actually decent, the pass for the goal was good and he had a few really good crosses. really didn't expect that at all.

06 Jun 2016 08:26:23
Morning Editors and Posters.

Hearing reports Barcelona might come calling for Coutniho if they could offload Turan. I have no issues if he move across to spain. They do have enough agents at Coppa to turn his head anyways and they always do. What worries me is the price, They wouldn't pay half of what we are looking at.

Thanks.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea where you get this "agents at Copa" nonsense from. It is simply a case of a player who has been performing well being of interest to other clubs. There is nothing special because it is a Liverpool player - it is simply the same as everyone wlse.}

06 Jun 2016 08:49:55
I meant his Brazilian teammates at Barcelona.

{Ed002's Note - You have an incredibly naive view of the game. There is nothing special about him and the world does not revolve around Liverpool or their players. There are no "statements of intent", there are no "smokescreens" and no other side gives a damn about players being signed by other clubs. It is a simple matter of other clubs being interested in a player that might lead to a bid. That is it - nothing more, nothing less.}

06 Jun 2016 09:36:09
I agree with you mate. I do expect him to move on and honestly I fear the worse mate. He is a hope and like previous years we might struggle to replace his quality. He is a special player at liverpool surrounded by many average players. Very important season ahead and hope we do get a good replacement if he leaves.
Thanks for your view Ed02.

06 Jun 2016 10:01:54
Barca pouncing now is a great shout for them. He will do well surrounded by their stars.

06 Jun 2016 13:01:19
It is simple, if Barcelona or PSG want him then they can pay a figure which satisfies the club in order to be able to make the deal happen.

Couts is a superb footballer, but he isn't a Suarez who has proven to be actually irreplaceable. I accept that Couts is only going to get better and that is why he will cost them top dollar, we can't make him stay but we can make sure we get the best deal we can to replace him.

A few days ago Ed002 said that we shouldn't discount the possibility of a deal for Goetze, so if he goes that might actually be an option in terms of suitable replacement.

Given that the transfer window hasn't actually opened as yet I see no reason to panic.

06 Jun 2016 14:56:46
Dennis - you say that Suarez has proven to be irreplacable but in fairness we never really tried!

Man city after Spurs.

06 Jun 2016 10:35:14
Fixtures aren't out yet, is this a post to stimulate posters into guessing the opening fixtures?

{Ed002's Note - No it is simply someone teasing the naive fans Waro.}

06 Jun 2016 10:46:23
Yeah fixtures not out until 15th June so unless your old man, wife's brothers dog sits at the FA I'm sure this is untrue.
