Hi Ed002, with all the debate about whether to make the season null and void or draw a line here if it can't be finished etc. I imagine if you asked most fans of all teams what is the fair thing to do it would be to finish the season no matter what.

Why could the Premier League not just set out to finish this current season no matter what before starting the next one - even if there was no football until January?

Considering these circumstances are completely unprecedented, why must the season be finished by the end of June? I know we're all bias here but it just is horribly unfair to discount 80% of a season esp. when we have as good as won it.

Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - The problem is that you are just thinking about Liverpool. There are already three Premier League clubs saying they would be happy to just scratch the season completely but the intent remains to complete the season - however unlikely it is looking right now. A decision will be taken at some point by the Premier League (requiring a 70% majority) to cancel the season. Then they would need to decide whether to draw a line across where we are right now or to just scracth all records for the season - the other options (such as behind closed doors, play offs for promotion and relegation) are not feasible as I have previously explained. The 21 "elite" European sides are to have a WebEx on Monday to discuss the whole issue, and all have been asked to digest the Imperial College report that suggests "social distancing" (or even Wuhan style complete suppression) would be required for about 18 months until a vacine or vacines are widely available. They will be asking each club to state their preference regarding this season as an indicator rather than anything else. It is clear that the three Italian sides involved will vote to end the season immediately.}

Agree5 Disagree0

Thanks for the quick reply Ed002!

Obviously it's natural as a fan to be thinking with red-tinted glasses, but what I'm asking is why there is the need for the season to be completed by a certain date, considering how unprecedented this situation is I would have thought rules could be changed to adapt to the circumstances?

I guess it would throw the timetable of future seasons out of kilter somewhat if we continued this season at a future date no matter but it seems to me to be the only way to ensure a fair result regardless of what team you support.

Read a report from Oxford Uni in which some scientists think the virus may have already infected anywhere between 30-70% of people already but I guess no one really knows at this point.

Hope everyone is staying safe.

{Ed002's Note - They would be changing the rules to stretch it out to the end of June. The rationale is to clear the decks moving forward so future seasons are not impacted. It is only the Liverpool supporters expecting future seasons to be disrupted to accommodate the completion of this season. At some point in the not too distant future the Premier League will take a vote to end this season, and as I have explained there are already three sides who want it ended immediately.}

27 Mar 2020 13:37:55
Many teams have run into costs this season.
Why not let this league end first, before a new league in which no team has been able to incurred any cost.
To cancel this season that many teams have invested so much energy for sake of the new season? For me no.

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what you are talking about, sorry.}

27 Mar 2020 14:14:36
Ed, do you have any understanding of how the TV rights deal may be worked out? There's talk of the fees needing to be returned if the season is voided, but that seems like total BS that is being thrown around by people not familiar with what is actually going on.

{Ed002's Note - There is no plan to pay back the televison and other broadcast costs shown. If any clubs have recieved funds beyond what would be the pro rata amount due for not completing the season may wih to negotiate with the broadcasters, but I don't know of any sides in that position.}

27 Mar 2020 18:10:00
Why abandon this season, to try and start another one (which might also be impacted by coronavirus) Complete this season, when possible then start next season. Which cane be completed in 19 weeks playing 2 games per week so it could start in January next door.

{Ed002's Note - You are simply thinking about Liverpool and nobody else.}

27 Mar 2020 18:22:20
No I am not i am making a perfectly reasonable suggestion. It is not only Liverpool that will be affected if the season isn't completed. Leeds, West Brom, a n other.
Coventry
Crewe Swindon Plymouth
Will all fail to be promoted.

27 Mar 2020 18:29:04
What about Leeds utd, West brom Ed? As Liverpool fans yes we're worried about this season, but there's a hell of a lot more at stake than our title. Teams have spent fortunes to now see their chances of promotion, European football all gone. Its abs rubbish to strike off virtually a whole season just so the next one starts on time. The powers that be didn't give 2 ****s about clubs or leagues when they stuck a world Cup in the middle of the 2022 season.

{Ed002's Note - I have explained there is an option that would work for Leeds and West Brom. Which powers that be is it you are referring to? It is unrelated to the World Cup..}

27 Mar 2020 18:57:53
You can't say anything on here or it's just shut down as being Liverpool biased, while we all want the title there's a load on the line for lots of clubs and nulling a praticcaly whole season because we have to worry bout the start of a next one it utter bollix,

27 Mar 2020 19:00:11
Also Leicester City not qualifying for the Champions League. That will cost them millions in future revenue!

27 Mar 2020 19:07:28
This is the problem with the draw the line proposal. It does work out well for some teams, but not for Liverpool (who are 1/ 2 wins from being mathematical champions) .
This is why Liverpool fans are making it about Liverpool.

27 Mar 2020 19:18:11
It is not just the Liverpool fans who want the league to put back next season it is the several teams below LFC for European places then there is the teams from Championship league up for promotion so stop being biased to LFC will you your boring now plonker.

27 Mar 2020 20:00:48
I’m guessing the leagues already have but I think the leagues need to make it clear the worse case scenario I. e. we must start again by mid May or the league, as per the lower leagues, will be null and void.

It’s horrible and we will be taunted until we eventually win it but it’s literally the only fair outcome for every team. They all signed up for a 38 game season and ending it any other way won’t be fair. Villa will feel they can get out the relegation places and spurs will feel they are in with a shot of the CL places. But for us hopefully we can continue the form that got us so far in front.

Yes we were 25 clear with a game in hand but we didn’t win it. Do we deserve the title? Probably but do we want it with an asterisk, this season doesn’t deserve that outcome.

ITs never going to happen but I’d have teams start with their points difference of 20th Place, so Norwich start on 0 and the rest scale up from there. As I say won’t happen but it would mean the last 29 games haven’t been a total waste. And could be done in each league, as I say won’t happen but a slightly different approach.

And Ed002, surely that option is off the table with the choice to null and void those lower leagues with no relegation or promotion.

{Ed002's Note - No such decision has been taken at this time but there will be a vote on April 3 as I explained earlier. If 70% of those voting at the PL meeting vote to end the season it will be decided then. Else the PL will give a best available date or a not before date in a press release late Friday next. There are really only two options on the table, and I have explained these. At least one European league will make the decision first - and they will end the season early. Yesterday three PL sides had made their position clear that they wanted the season ended early - I understand that today at least two more have taken that view. But right now the PL hopes the season can be finished by June 30.}

27 Mar 2020 20:21:59
I’m guessing that’s the Italians Ed002?

Fingers crossed that we can get it finished by the 30th but think Covid-19 has other ideas.

{Ed002's Note - Yes, they have a meeting scheduled.}

27 Mar 2020 20:24:26
Gotta be honest I'm pretty disappointed at how people are prioritizing liverpool winning the league over the health of the nation even if they play behind closed doors fans (idiots) will gather this lock down we are in for up to 3 weeks that doesn't mean after 3 weeks it's all back to normal this is to draw the infection rate over a longer period of time so the NHS can cope with the patients. It's not IF you catch corona its WHEN. If you think Corona virus is going to be around for 12 months and social distancing will also be around for 12 months that's the more realistic view and the likelihood of next season even starting is slim to non in my opinion but that's just the way I see it.

{Ed002's Note - To be fair, whilst they are moaning and whining I don't think anyone is really looking to prioritise the Liverpool games over the health of the nation. We have had a couple of idiots who see the whole thing as a hoax, but generally folks understand and it is simply disappointment.}

27 Mar 2020 20:28:47
Ed2 if this season is voided what's the plan for starting next season? Do you think it will be a later start than normal? And do you think even next season might be skipped depending on how covid19 continues?

Do you expect champions league to finish this season?

{Ed002's Note - Everyone would like the season to start on time, but it is not in control of anyone until the blight is over. The UEFA plans for the CL and EL are not going to work and whilst they want it finished it will be very difficult.}

27 Mar 2020 20:44:40
Berg I don’t think anyone is prioritising it over health of people, as Ed002 has said it’s just disappointed.

When gerrard slipped I could except that as it’s football, it happens. It was obviously still hugely disappointing though.

This is completely out of ours or anyone’s control and it hurts, I am 30 in a couple of weeks so I thought the wait was finally coming to an end. I also was due to go to the national and England’s first game at the Euros, disappointing that all that has fallen by the wayside but I have my health so I can’t complain!

But it’s football, we have to deal with it, there are much bigger things in life to worry about.

Ed002, sorry I have another question, if it gets voided I am right that all the records go from the season to, i. e. southamptons 9-0 thrashing by Leicester?

{Ed002's Note - If they did decide to void the season then yes, the results would be exponged with the possible exception of the League Cup - that would nned to be discussed. If they take the Bundesliga option the results stay and a line is drawn across.}

27 Mar 2020 21:02:09
I don't think it is fair to say Liverpool fans have been moaning and whining - fans are gutted and rightly so, whilst also realising that the human cost of the virus is far greater than us not winning the league.

Of course the health of the nation is far, far more important than football, no one is disputing that.

Obviously don't know the ins and outs of it but was wondering why they couldn't just put this season on hold indefinitely and play it before the start of a new season whenever that may be. I imagine that's what many fans are thinking right now.

{Ed002's Note - Many Liverpool fans are constantly whining and moaning. The Premier League are not going to put the season on hold indefinately because of the Liverpool fans.}

27 Mar 2020 21:16:03
Ed002 obviously we are going to put our point of view across from a Liverpool perspective, as a fan that is natural and it is unreasonable to expect us our opinions to be totally objective. Neither is it just Liverpool who are affected by it, fans from many other teams have similar concerns.

but obviously everyone's health and safety and the prioritising of resources to the NHS is far more important right now and I don't think anyone disputes that - we all have a lot more to worry about.

{Ed002's Note - But the fans from other clubs don't whine like the Liverpool fans do.}

27 Mar 2020 22:07:46
This has all become way too bleak for me.

I hereby announce the end of my visitations and interactions on this site.

I'm sorry.

28 Mar 2020 00:35:33
Hi ED002, thanks for your responses and apologies if this has been asked
Hypothetically speaking, if we had already won the league at this point and the season is expunged from records, that would obviously include the title being wiped also?

Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - It has not been discussed but you are right it would need to be - as is the case with the League Cup.}

28 Mar 2020 02:50:55
A question was asked in the earlier post, what’s the urgency of starting the next season in time or even as soon as possible as compared to trying to have this current season completed?
I read and read and there’s still no answer.

No matter how long it take, and as a result how long the delay is, what’s the implication of making the decision to have the season completed 1 way or another?

Look, we keep talking about next season.
God forbid it, what if this vivid 19 delay and grind everything to a stop as it is now till next March (2021)?
Or if we are able to start say next season some time and get hit by something again? We cancel everything again in preparation for the next next season?

We finish what we set out to do, and that appears the only logical decision which is why I applaud the decision to delay this season indefinitely.
It is not an issue if putting the health of people ahead of Football.
Simply, start whenever medical experts said it is ok to. But start to finish the season.

I read that there’s a solution for Leeds and west Brom?
Promote them? Fulham won’t challenge that?
And a solution for Leicester? Expand the champions league or whatever?
You raise a solution and there will be an objection.

I have yet to read any logical objection to the solution to postpone the league indefinitely.

28 Mar 2020 05:57:58
I, like all Liverpool fans, would be gutted if we don’t get the opportunity to finish what we started this season, but we have to put the nations health first.

That being said, it’s a pretty torid time for everyone at the moment and with football generating so much money (for players at least) there must be some way our beloved sport can help bring some joy back.

There could be wider financial implications to wiping out a season so my suggestion would be that if the season can’t be completed, it’s decided based on current positions, with no relegations but with promotions so we end up with larger numbers of teams per league (which would make a lot of people happy) and the parachute payments normally given to relegated clubs donated to the NHS as a thank you to them for their amazing work.

I am sure I will now be told all the reasons that’s can’t happen/ work, but it would be a nice way to do it, even if certain players earning over a certain amount a week needed to contribute to it (because let’s face it, do footballers really “need” another £150,000 a week that they are earning?! Wouldn’t take a lot to raise a massive amount that way - and yes I know some are already doing their bit)

28 Mar 2020 02:28:15
Thanks for your response,

Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - Show Eds note.}

28 Mar 2020 08:54:08
Thanks for the insight Eds. Seen as football is on hold indefinitely, how on earth can any teams, uefa, the fa etc even consider starting again In August? The vaccine realistically is a year away, and we've already seen a number of players and coaches get the virus! It hurts but surely the most logical thing to do is bite the bullet and at least right off any sports globally until 2021/ 22, if not 2022? I know there are huge financial implications of this, more so for your every day individual not earning 10K+ a week, and ideally clubs and or the countries these individuals are affected should be given support.

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure where you are getting this from but as I have explained everyone would like the season to start on time, but it is not in control of anyone until the blight is over.}

28 Mar 2020 09:36:26
Apologies if it's not clear, what I'm getting at is why is any sporting body assuming Covid-19 will be solved by the beginning of next season? The season is already disrupted if they try and start later, so write it off? Then football and any other sporting event can resume when Covid-19 has a vaccine and is no longer spreading. Unless the work is vital e. g. health work, plumbing etc, or you can work from home, everything else in the world is currently suspended and rightly so. So why should sport be treated any differently just because some people (FA etc) want to start again on time next season, when that is likely unrealistic and probably irresponsible.

{Ed002's Note - You have clearly misunderstood something and gone off at a tangent. No sporting body is assuming anything about dates that the virus and disease will be gone. The vaccine is a completely different matter. I have explained the situation with the Premier League and other leagues. It is a dynamic situation and I have explained that there will be a meeting of all of the Premier League members on Friday - and you can expect some sort of statement about dates at the end of that meeting.}

28 Mar 2020 10:16:46
Waynechai 👍

I’m with EasyBall, this isn’t helpful.

Stay safe everyone. Back soon, hopefully ✌️.

28 Mar 2020 10:26:21
No Ed02, I’m sure the other fans aren’t ‘whining as much as Liverpool fans’ as you put it! But do you really think they wouldn’t be if it was their team that was about to miss out on their first title for 30 years? Of course they would! Other fans aren’t ‘whining’ as much because they don’t have as much to lose. It’s not rocket science! Ridiculous comment by yourself!

{Ed002's Note - You are missing the pojnt - Liverpool fans whine constantly. That is the truth and attempts to try and bring anyone else in to it are simply embarrassing.}

28 Mar 2020 10:37:35
Okay, thanks Eds, have a good day.

{Ed002's Note - And you.}

28 Mar 2020 14:16:03
From what I have read (Imperial College) . This Social distancing stuff will need to kept up for approx 18 months until a vaccine is good to go. Only during that time when the virus is "under control" that we can go about our daily routine, approx two thirds of the time will be actually social distancing. Under those circumstances I can't see how even next seasons PL or any other sport can be considered.

{Ed002's Note - That report is due to be discussed by the “elite” European clubs on Monday. But no decisions will be made based on it.}

28 Mar 2020 20:25:47
I find it very unprofessional "calling out" Liverpool fans as a whole for being whiners over this current situation. I understand you get thousands of messages a day regarding various topics and whilst I sympathize with the fact that it must be exhausting reading the same stuff over and over again, or dealing with genuine idiocy, I don't appreciate your frustration being taken out on genuine questions from fans that simply want your expert opinion and facts.

Fans are obviously disappointed naturally, how else are we supposed to feel? Happy? It doesn't help when you've got pundits, ex professionals, and people associated with the game coming out and giving their two cents on the topic with the majority making it about how Liverpool fans will be disappointed whilst completely disregarding fans of other teams that won't be able to see their team see success. Not many have included fans of Leeds, West Brom. and so on, in their piece about what should be done with the season which is outright disrespectful if you ask me.

Making it about Liverpool and their fans which is something we didn't ask for? We didn't ask to be talked about in that regard? We would just like to wait and see what's going to happen whilst hoping for a positive solution but instead it just feels like constant sneaky jibes being thrown our direction. Call it delusional but you're delusional if you think Man Utd fans aren't loving it and teasing us over potentially missing the trophy after it being a guarantee for most of the season.

No one has taken into account the fans that have travelled all season to see their teams play home and away? Money on plane tickets, matchday tickets, accomodation, food and beverage. spent all that money to see their team be successful with the hope of glory at the end of it all, making it all worth it in the end. Have we disregarded their hard earned money they've spent?

I'm sorry if it may appear as if I'm ranting, I'm just stating my frustration with it all. Everything is up in the air at the moment and no one truly knows what will happen. But don't rope us all into the one category as whiners because of the terrible situation we all find ourselves in.

I hope everyone's healthy and safe and your loved ones are the same. Take care of one another and let's all get through this together. Thank you.

{Ed033's Note - Maybe Liverpool fans are being called out as a whole for being winners :)

29 Mar 2020 05:04:56
My suggestion is simple the 2019/ 20 becomes 20/ 21 and we (if we can) resume football the season in April 2020 from the point we are at now, this will mean all teams in all divisions are not impacted by not finishing a season.

The obvious problem here is the money the clubs earn will likely be withdrawn so it would be up to the players to take a wage freeze.

29 Mar 2020 12:52:37
In my experience there are good and bad in all walks of life. Calling out Liverpool fans as being a different breed from everyone else is utter rubbish! I have lived all over the world, people are people in equal measure. Fans are fans, there are the idiots and the kind in equal measure for every club. To suggest any different is thoroughly ignorant.

I wish that you all stay safe and look after each other in these testing times.

29 Mar 2020 10:21:30
The Imperial College prediction is based on a theoretical model, and like all models, is entirely based on the assumptions you build into it, and the data you chose to input.

If the FA are using theoretical epidemiological models to make decisions, then they need to study how theoretical models are built, and how they can go wrong, and take advice and modeling predictions from far more than one person.

Otherwise they may end up making very foolish or costly decisions.

{Ed002's Note - You clearly don't understand - The FA has nothing to do with this.}

30 Mar 2020 13:55:22
Apologies if this has been done, but if this season is expunged how will teams be selected for European competition next season - whenever there the next season eventually takes place?

Had it been discussed at all that the cancelled games are out down as a draw until games resume?

As an aside, and I hope this doesn't stop my question being answered but.

As to the ongoing discussion here about what's right, fair or otherwise. Obviously Liverpool fans will be disappointed, I personally wouldn't want the title "gifted" to us however inevitable it might seem we would have won it anyway but whatever happens happens now.

I do think (fans of) other teams will also be feeling a bit frustrated depending on how this goes. I can't imagine Villa feeling great if a line is drawn, having a game in hand - however unlikely it is they would overcome Wolves, Liverpool, or Man U. but we know all too well that equally as strange/ unlikely things have happened of late.

Sheffield Utd also, theoretically have a CL spot to contend for if City's suspension were to be upheld. Lot of money and bragging rights involved there.

In fact any team down to about Arsenal in 9th or maybe even Burnley in 10th might feel they've missed a chance for European qualification.

I can't speak for the fans of other clubs in entirety or even as a mean average, but the fans I do know are more obsessed with Liverpool winning the title or not than they are about how their own clubs are affected so I guess you can't really blame Liverpool fans too much, either, eh?

🤣🤣🤣.

{Ed002's Note - There is no agreement at this time. There are various discussions going on - the "elite" sides have met today already, the Premier League will meet on Friday - with the PFA and no doubt The FA present. But there are no decisions, just various proposals.

I have explained everything that is on the table over and over - you need to read the posts.}
