Long time reader, first post.

American here that will be coming to the UK for the first time (England, Wales, and Scotland) to see Liverpool play Sheffield United and Man U during the trip. I was hoping y'all could help give me a local's perspective on a few general things to know for our trip.

Any food recommendations to check out? We will be in London, Liverpool, Manchester, and York. Really want to get good fish and chips during our stay.

Best places for grocery shopping?

Best pubs in Liverpool to watch a game during the week?

Any good places to check out besides the normal "touristy" places most websites call out?

Any other helpful things you'd like to recommend we appreciate it.

Thanks guys!

{Ed025's Note - hi Lawilt,welcome aboard mate

in london Camden town is great for pubs imo
if you are in the city centre Einstein in Concert square is very good to watch the game in liverpool.
when in York you must visit the "Shambles"
try and visit Goodison park, its iconic, and Bramley Moore on the dock will become the best ground in the world.. :)

Keep your eye out for Goodison, you could easily mistake it for Tranmere's ground, but no, it is actually home to a PL side :)

Try to drive up onto the Yorkshire Moors while visiting York. Some great pubs and ales. Whitley Bay is a great day out (weather permitting) and you should find good fish and chips there. Have to try Theakston Old Peculiar ale; their website has good information on it.

York is steeped in Nordic history and has some amazing sites and lots of museums etc.

If you’re hungry in London, Hawksmoor (for steak) and Bleecker Burger are both worth a visit. The Rake in Borough Market is a must if you like craft beer.

If you want some culture try the Whitechapel and Serpentine galleries, as opposed to the big name alternatives. Both free admission.

Sorry, just …. can’t …… stop ……………myself………

Isn’t Goodison a shambles?

{Ed025's Note - i like that WDW, but when the "old lady"is gone we will all miss it mate, like it or not it is iconic and a throwback to the days when football was fun and free from corruption..."memories are made of this".. :)

Said it b4 but the games gone imo. Ruined by money and corruption. Makes it a lot less appealing.

I second Hawksmoor for steak. Also, Gordon's wine bar is excellent, can't book so arrive quite early to get a table. Also, The Ned is an interesting bar and worth a visit.

Agree Ed25. Used to love the Derbies and the banter and going to the match with members of the family - some red and the daft ones blue. Of course some of the games were poor and sometimes it rained and was bitterly cold but the memories are nearly all good. It’ll be a shame to see Goodison go.

{Ed025's Note - halcyon days indeed WDW, shame that its not the same anymore mate because of the idiots..

Where in Wales are you going Law?

We'll be going to Alnwick Castle and Query Karts, will probably stop at a few other castles along the way.

Alnwick Castle is a great visit. It's the same castle that's in the beginning of Blackadder if you ever watched that. Great series. While you're up that way Barmburgh Castle is great too.

There’s a Hawksmoor in Liverpool in the stunning India building. In Liverpool, if you’re a Beatles fan check out the casbah in west Derby where Pete Best’s mum used to live and the Beatles used to play, and while you’re in the area you can go and see Melwood, it’s about a 3 min drive away.
There’s great pubs like the roscoe head in town, proper little old place that does great beers. Peter kavanaghs is another good pub as is the Blackburn arms, you could do a little pub crawl. If you’re going to penny lane there’s a nice little restaurant called Spire just by it.
If you’ve got a bit of money you could go to the art school or if you’re really pushing the boat out you can go to Moor Hall. Maybe also head over to Chester for a day, nice little place, treat the mrs to afternoon tea in the Grosvenor and walk the Roman walls.
There’s tons to do, enjoy.

Regarding Manchester; for food there are places like Tattu, hawksmoore or dishoom which are more upmarket. But alternatively crazy pedros (pizza / bar), almost famous, or federal (brunch) are good shouts…genuinely can’t think of a good Chippy in central Manchester…

Bar wise atlas is a good gin bar situated beneath a rail line, Albert schloss, oast house or roxys (bar with loads of games etc) are good. Ppl joke but if just want to see BPL games and city play at home whilst there can probably get ticket….
