A couple of years ago, I'd have loved us to buy Colwill. He looked excellent, calm under pressure, great on the ball and pretty solid. But last year he was well off the pace. However, that could be said of most of the Chelsea squad. I still think he will develop into a great player, but probably not worth the financial risk considering his cost.

van den Berg and Quansah are not only a similar age, they're better.

MK, I haven't seen any of VDB to make a judgement ,but you seem to think highly of him so will be interesting to see how pre season goes. I definitely agree he needs a chance under the new manager but my only concern is that he has been around for a number of years and has never been promoted to LFCs first team, there must be thinking behind this by the powers that be.

Quansah, I totally agree. I said months ago he is extremely underrated and I personally think he will grow into one of the top CBs, especially if he continues learning from VVD.

Colwill seemed to have it all but like I said, did not look great last season. But was this down to tactics, lack of confidence or just generally a bad season. Time will tell I guess but I can't see us making a move for him anyway.

I think we’ll regret it if we let Sepp go mate. There’s a reason we paid good money for him as a baby faced 17 year old! He’s quick, good in the air, graceful on the ball, defends well 1v1. My only concerns about him are his positional sense at CB in a back 4 as he mainly as a RB for Preston and in a back 3 for Mainz. I do really think he has the attributes to really succeed for us though. I don’t think he’ll be world class or anything like that, but he could easily become a very good CB.

Agree on Quansah though. He has the potential to be world class in my opinion. In fact I’ll put my head on the block, I think he is the best player to come out of the academy since Gerrard. I think he could even surpass Trent if he stays grounded and injury free. Trent has always had question marks about certain aspects of his game, whereas with Quansah I think he’ll be a complete footballer. He gets compared to Virgil because he plays for us but he reminds me more of Vincent Kompany. Less recovery pace then Virgil but more willing to put his body on the line and more aggressive in the tackle. I loved that tackle he put in against Everton. When the rest of our team were all bottling it and losing sight of what it means to play in a derby he tried to lead the charge and was simply let down by those around him. He is a leader.

Colwill could be a good LB in a team that doesn’t want to be very adventurous but he looks lost at CB at times for me. Although that could be a product of his environment. Chelsea is a complete mess. At 21 time is on his side and I do think he’d be a decent signing if Konate were to leave.

Stuie is he didn't have a horrible injury in 22/ 23 he probably would have been looked at last summer by klopp. Before that he had a great 18 month loan at Preston where the fans loved him.

Suppose a lot can be said of many players. They have a stand out season, we all want the club to spend over £60m on him, then the following season he flops and we’re all on here like thank god Chelsea bought him instead ?.

VdB has had an excellent season for Mainz, unfortunately the team has been poor but he stood out as probably their best player, which is supported by the stats too, he was statistically better than both Pacho or Hincapie too. I think we’d be kicking ourselves if we let him go on the cheap without giving him a chance.

If Joe Gomez departs, VdB is a great cost effective replacement.

Pre-season will be key!

VDB may have been statistically better than Pacho and Hincapie.

However I think we need a left sided centre back/ left back more than we need a right sided centre back.

Where do we see VDB fitting in with Konate and Quansah at right centre back already and Bradley/ Trent at right back?

Begrudgingly I think VDB will be sold this summer to raise funds for other purchases.

And that’s not because I don’t rate him, I just don’t see where he will fit in, unless Konate is sold.

Which leftfooted CB covers for virgil at the moment?

31 May 2024 10:17:18
Quansah can play LCB and realistically how many games will Virgil not start anyway? Maybe early domestic Cup games. Nearly every League and CL game he will be starting and if we get to a cup semi final he’ll play that too.

Virgil doesn’t really miss games unless he gets cut in half by an overweight Mackem torpedo.

31 May 2024 10:59:02
If Quansah is to be the main starter at right centre-back, wouldn't it make more sense to cash in on Konate rather than Van Den Berg given his injury record and higher market value?

31 May 2024 13:47:20
Thats why i wouldn't spend big on an ignacio or hicapie MK, would only be a very expensive backup to virg.

I read a stat that said 93.1% of statistics are a complete and utter load of bo! ox.

Lies, damned lies and statistics.
