I think we should get Jobe Bellingham if we can. We can loan him back to Sunderland for a season or two. I think he has it in him.
Although, I am struggling to think of any two brothers who played at the top level and were as good as each other. Does anyone know of any two of such brothers?
{Ed001's Note - Ayews?}
31 May 2024 11:21:20
Benders?
31 May 2024 11:22:10
Theo and Lucas Hernández.
31 May 2024 11:48:59
Michael and Brian Laudrup?
{Ed001's Note - Michael was light years ahead of Brian.}
31 May 2024 11:56:27
Surely the answer has to be the Laudrup brothers? Followed by the de Boers, also Erwin Koeman wasn’t anywhere near as good as Ronald but he also earned a whole bunch of caps for Holland, so….
{Ed001's Note - de Boers is a good answer.}
31 May 2024 11:56:56
Theo and Lucas Hernandez, Marcus and Khepren Thuram, Bilbao Williams brothers Ed? Arsenal's Timber actually got a brother playing for Fayenoord in the name of Quentin Timber. It actually surprises me that there are many siblings playing at top level now.
{Ed001's Note - all good shouts.}
31 May 2024 11:33:34
Edd001 what do you make of jobe and can you see us ever pursuing the lad?
{Ed001's Note - he has excellent technique but he lacks any kind of explosive movement, he is like a big old centre-back, it takes him a while to get going. I am not sure that his future will be in midfield, unless he works on improving his acceleration heavily. It is not just that players can ghost away from him very easily and he struggles to catch them, it is that he can't use skill to get away from a man because of the lack of acceleration. By the time he takes a step, they are already back at him. In a good side, I can see him being a very good ball-playing centre-back if he can learn to read the game from there as well as he does in midfield.}
31 May 2024 12:13:05
Wasn't there also Fabio and Rafael? I mean, they weren't any good but they're standards were quite similar to each other and they did technically play at the top level together.
31 May 2024 12:17:07
Pippo and Simone Inzaghi.
31 May 2024 12:29:10
Not sure I can really agree with you there about Mike and Brian laudrup Ed, arguably Michael was a cut above but that’s probably only because he is one of the 5-8 greatest number 10s of all time, I would say Brian would be in a top 20-25 though, and that’s really no slouch…. both very unselfish and incredibly elegant players, both capable of scoring themselves but more inclined to produce sublime assists in the final third, both brilliant at ghosting past players at will…the thing that held Brian back I guess was will and mentality, he needed an arm around him and a fanbase that loved him, hence the perceived failures at Milan and fiorentina and him staying at rangers despite interest from the PL at the time….
I hate rangers politically and as an institution but I bought a gers shirt with laudrup on it cuz I loved watching him so much and would have loved for him to have come to Liverpool…also he had good looks to go with the magic on the ball, so that helped.
{Ed001's Note - Brian was nowhere near the same level. He was very good but certainly not top 20-25 of all time. Not even close to it. Far too many occasions he downed tools and coasted, large parts of his career ahead of moves he couldn't be arsed. And he stayed at Rangers because they refused to sell him and he spent the last part of his time there not putting a lick of effort in.}
31 May 2024 12:31:02
Incidentally I think Ronald de boer was never on the same level as Frank though unlike the laudrups they didn’t play the same position…Frank was a defensive player who was pretty much good to great at all aspects of the game.
{Ed001's Note - except actually defending.}
31 May 2024 12:50:03
Charlton brothers best of the lot.
{Ed001's Note - great shout.}
31 May 2024 12:56:29
Probably true Ed, he was better at carrying the ball out of defence and taking set pieces ??.
{Ed001's Note - he was an awful defender. Teams always used to target him as the weak point. But he was part of that whole keep the ball to stop the opposition scoring ethos, rather than actually learning how to do basic defending.}
31 May 2024 13:05:00
Any other famous defenders folks often categorise as being world class that you would argue were actually bad at defending and were on the field because they contributed to a team system in others ways, Ed? Would love to see a list ?.
{Ed001's Note - you could put pretty much anyone who played in defence for Barcelona in the last 30 years or so in that category. Very few were actually top class defenders, but they fit into the way the team played.}
31 May 2024 13:32:18
Puyol and Pique Ed? They both play in sides that priorities possession is Barcelona and Spain, so kinda hard to see if they are actually good defenders or not.
31 May 2024 13:36:23
The Simic brothers that played for Croatia.
31 May 2024 14:28:49
The Neville’s, both as bad as each other.
31 May 2024 13:50:06
I belive ed1 we had Michael Laudrup almost bought in early 80's, only we didn't finalise deal quick enough r something like that. he definitely wanted to come to us but ended up. signing for juve i think. Is that right ed1 do u know?
{Ed001's Note - no he didn't think he was good enough so turned us down.}
31 May 2024 14:47:56
The Chuckle brothers currently play for Utd don’t they?
31 May 2024 15:46:03
I remember the liverpool execs at the time saying that laudrup wanted some sort of get-out clause in his contract so he'd be ablve to leave if he didn't like how things were going? that's what I remember anyway, could be wrong. imagine if we had Kenny and Laudrup in the same team, would have been very frightening.
31 May 2024 15:56:06
Michael was light years ahead of Brian. Not even a conversation.
31 May 2024 18:03:01
Thanks for response ed1, big loss not getting laudrup he was mighty player and wouldve suited us the way he played. i didn't realise that why we didn't get him, i suppose at time we where dominant team in europe and wouldve been hard to break into the team. i think there father was also a danish international footballer.
{Ed001's Note - he was good enough though, it is such a shame. He was a Liverpool fan as well.}
31 May 2024 19:08:41
Thank you Magico I was starting to think I was in a parallel universe.
Yes World Cup winners Jack and Bobby Charlton.
31 May 2024 19:11:22
Michael Laudrup was abeast of a footballer. In fact, he was Figo before Figo as in, he won titles with Barcelona up to the 93/ 94 season. And then moved to Real Madrid the next season and won the title there, just like Figo did .
The difference btw he and Figo was that Figo suffered sever backlash from the Barcelona fans (remember the pig head launched onto the pitch in the next classico? ) . Funny that this type of backlash never happened with Laudrup.
31 May 2024 19:24:48
Rush and Aldo?
31 May 2024 23:14:30
Two sets of twins. The Van de Kherkoff brothers. And the De Boers. Both Dutch.
Funnily enough, I just read that Joel Matip had an older brother named Marvin who played professional football too.
{Ed025's Note - if you are including the Matip brothers ArAy....you might as well add Barry and Paul Chuckle to the mix mate.. :)
01 Jun 2024 08:16:23
Yaya and kolo?
01 Jun 2024 10:44:54
The Futchers, four of them iirc started with Luton.
The Fashanu's John and Justin - or were they cousins?
James and Marcus Tavernier are also related.
Kephren and Marcus? Thuram?
Jimmy and Brian Greenhoff played for Man United in the 70's
Eddie and Frank Gray were regulars in the 'Dirty' Leeds era
The Longstaffs at Newcastle although one has moved on now.
Just off the top of my head (not previously mentioned) lots more I'm sure.
{Ed001's Note - Fashanus is a good shout - Justin was a far better player than John and a far better person too.}
01 Jun 2024 11:34:07
What about Rush n Aldridge. definitely brothers . same hairdo n muzzys. Jeremy kyle DNA would prove it.
01 Jun 2024 12:27:50
Socrates and Rai were pretty good too.
