Ok, who was our best player when Souness was manager?

17 Dec 2025 19:55:04
Probably Souness.

17 Dec 2025 20:01:38
Hard to say Monster -

There were a Few good players during his time but he never really got them performing - mark Wright was a good CH at the time but perhaps just going over the hill slightly - Rushie was still capable so was John Barnes but I suppose Steve McManaman was potentially the best - in my opinion that is!

17 Dec 2025 20:05:13
Sorry monster

& And Fowler / Redknapp!

17 Dec 2025 20:16:22
Where would you rank Souness in the list of best Midfielders you’ve seen?
Football league and or Prem.

17 Dec 2025 20:17:09
Rob Jones until injuries done him, then probably say God then Macca.

17 Dec 2025 20:56:56
Souness, was our greatest ever midfielder. Hated him as a manager. He was a total disaster, and I still can’t work out his best player during his time.
Maybe Macca?

17 Dec 2025 21:04:35
Souness was a complete midfielder
The best I’ve ever seen play for us.

17 Dec 2025 21:06:51
I agree Souness was our greatest midfielder.

As for El Rato, the way he left the club was worse than that RB, who's name I've conveniently forgotten.

17 Dec 2025 21:12:10
Paul stewart.

17 Dec 2025 21:15:13
I will be hated for this, but I would put Mad
Graeme above Kenny in our pantheon.

And a doc about him would be far more interesting than the Kenny one.

He totally messed up the club as manager. But his pleasure the night we won the title was a moment of joy for me.

{Ed025's Note - above Kenny MS?, big shout that mate..

17 Dec 2025 21:15:29
I'd say Gerrard was our greatest midfielder but obviously not the most successful. He unfortunately wasn't as blessed as GS having such talent everywhere around him. But certainly both are in my all time first 11.

17 Dec 2025 22:00:16
Monster . I think you've been drinking the energy drink monster too much . Souness was better than King Kenny . they other week you said the spanish Judas was better than Gerrard . need to stop drinking it.

17 Dec 2025 22:16:42
Fowler was our best player under Souness.

Kenny was a level above Souness, not a close call for me.

{Ed025's Note - different positions of course Ron, but Kenny is iconic mate..

17 Dec 2025 22:46:37
Fowler and Rob Jones.

17 Dec 2025 22:53:37
Sorry Monster but you are clueless. KK is in a separate category to everyone else. There is everybody else then there is Kenny.

17 Dec 2025 23:11:55
Souness is the best British central midfielder ever.
Gerrard had one-off levels of talent, so was just amazing in attacking positions, but Souness was easily the better CM.

17 Dec 2025 23:28:58
Yeah, but…. GS apart from Beckenbauer the best cm in my lifetime. Dalglish was a brilliant number 10, but not the greatest I have seen.

I would also say Hansen is alongside Virgil the best cb I have seen.

I adore KD, but I don’t think he redefined his role as much as AH, Virgil and GS did.

17 Dec 2025 23:56:03
Obviously taking the mick here a bit, as Beck more of a sweeper than a cm - but Souness kind of played the same role for us. He was basically a defender who would step out and play the ball.

18 Dec 2025 00:19:32
Lowe - if your going for the best british CM ever then Duncan Edwards would be up there ( according to my old dad ) -

Having not seen Edwards I’d go for Souness.

18 Dec 2025 01:06:54
If you ask Souness he’d say Mark Walters.

18 Dec 2025 05:59:16
Torben Piecknik.

18 Dec 2025 07:14:03
Rob jones would have kept rat face out of the England squad and been englands rb for years but god for me the most natural striker I’ve seen.

18 Dec 2025 07:37:44
Graeme sourness was dale winton’s best man in a weird (fake) wedding to Nell McAndrew ?.

18 Dec 2025 07:45:37
Rob Jones.

18 Dec 2025 09:05:24
I used to go to every home game under souness (lucky me) . Macca was the most infuriating player I’ve ever seen. He would beat two players then stop and try and do it again which meant the oppos defence were back again.

He did this every game. Was too keen to show off his undoubted dribbling skills. Would have been way more effective if he released the ball earlier.

{Ed001's Note - I agree, and he also had a horrible tendency to just run into blind alleys, get surrounded and lose the ball.}

18 Dec 2025 10:21:55
From what I’ve heard and seen, Duncan Edward’s was special. But I’d prob go for sourness simply because I saw way more of him and he did it for a lot longer time.

18 Dec 2025 11:19:49
Souness would control a game inside the first ten minutes of the start he had everything except great pace but he made up for that in other ways he is with out doubt the best midfielder we have ever had with Stevie G a close second . YNWA.

18 Dec 2025 11:27:45
Great Britain has never produced a better centre midfielder than Souness, period. He could defend, attack, he was an exceptional passer, fantastic first touch, he was tactically switched on and his aggression was unmatched. The fact that every single one of his team mates would say he was the most important player in the team says it all, Hansen is on record as saying as a team, they felt they could beat anyone with him there.

Opponents feared him for his ability and his fight. (I’ll never forget him absolutely clattering a Bucharest player and for the rest of the match they were scared to go near him)

18 Dec 2025 11:40:34
Easy. Barnes and Rushy.

Aside from Rob Jones, McManaman and Fowler coming through - the rest were a bunch of misfits.

18 Dec 2025 14:18:31
100% Viktor - I also rave about Souness because I love aggressive midfield generals (who can play) - their presence scares the other team, and stops their own team dropping standards and stinking the place out - no wonder Liverpool were so good with him in the middle.

Aside from his occasional thuggery, I was a big fan of Roy Keane for this reason, though he was nowhere near Souness as a player.

18 Dec 2025 14:45:42
Love John Barnes more than any other LFC player but his peak years were under Dalglish. He was still good under Souness.
